Here we break down our top picks for best restaurants on Fire Island. Our rankings factor in the quality of food, service, convenience of location, and atmosphere. Restaurants are separated into two categories: fine dining and casual dining.
Best of Fine Dining
Hideaway Restaurant
At the top of our list is the Hideaway Restaurant on Ocean Beach. Located adjacent to the Great South Bay, the Hideaway Restaurant offers fresh seafood and American style cuisine. Indoor and outdoor seating is available; however, nothing compares to the incredible view of the bay made possible by the restaurant’s unique location. The average cost per person is around $40 and perfect for romantic occasions and families with children.
The Pines Bistro and Martini Bar
Although Ocean Beach has a more impressive selection of restaurants, you certainly don’t want to pass up the Pines Bistro if you are looking for the ultimate dining experience. Known for its intimate style of dining, the Pines Bistro is the premiere Italian restaurant on Fire Island. It may not be the easiest to locate at first but the reviews speak for themselves. The food and service are fantastic, although, their call to fame is the martinis. The total cost can range anywhere from $40 to $100 per person depending on how many drinks you order.
Top of the Bay
Arguably this pick should be higher on the list but due to its less convenient location, it gets a lower spot. Located in Cherry Grove, the Top of the Bay restaurant is the place to be for a sunset dinner. They offer American and International style cuisine in a fine dining setting along with live music and a full-service bar. Although somewhat lacking in beer selections, their mixed drinks are top of the line. The staff are very knowledgeable and will be able to help you navigate their diverse menu. During the summer, you can expect to have to make a reservation but it’s definitely worth the visit if you ask the locals. On average, you can expect to pay $40 to $60 per person.
Best of Casual Dining
CJ’s Restaurant and Bar
The home of Fire Island’s favorite drink, “Rocket Fuel”, CJ’s Restaurant and Bar is the spot to be for good-eats and tropical drinks in a casual setting. CJ’s offers American style cuisine with an emphasis on seafood and is located in Ocean Beach. The atmosphere is more typical of a bar than a restaurant albeit a classy one. During the summer, music is always playing and seating can be difficult to manage. Whether you go for food, drinks, or both, CJ’s is a great casual hangout to take your friends to. Including drinks, the typical cost per person runs around $50 ($15-30 if you’re not buying alcohol).
Rachel’s Bakery and Restaurant
Famous for their delicious desserts and breakfast food, Rachel’s Bakery is fantastic for a casual outing and amazing comfort food. Their signature pancakes and coffee are the best on the island. Don’t forget to try their homemade crumb cake either! Though a little bit on the pricey side, the service and great tasting food more than make up for it. Rachel’s is the premiere brunch spot on the island. Expect to spend $15-30 per person.
Michael’s Ristorante & Pizzeria
Last on our list of casual dining locations is Michael’s Ristorante and Pizzeria. This chef-owned restaurant is a local favorite. In typical Italian fashion, the portions are huge and perfect for sharing. The pizza is made to order using only fresh ingredients. Michael’s also has some of the best crepes on the island (the Nutella crepe is highly recommended). Whether you’re stopping by for lunch or looking for a casual dinner, Michael’s has you covered with authentic Italian eats.
The average cost per person is $15-30.
Flynn’s Fire Island
Known for their daily happy hour, Flynn’s is the perfect spot for an afternoon drink or late-night partying on Ocean Beach. Live music is always playing in the evening and the view is incredible. The food is typical of grilled bar food with an emphasis on seafood. After sunset, the crowd picks up and is ideal for those looking for a late-night outing. Like with most of the bars on Fire Island, they accept cash only; so, bring plenty of cash if you plan on ordering drinks.
